Individual Occupational Therapy

Individual Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a unique profession that takes a holistic view of their clients, their lives and the environments they live in.

Occupational Therapists at Family Connections Sydney carefully assess their client’s strengths, abilities and difficulties in performing their life roles (being a student, friend, son or daughter). This could include self care skills, poor visual perception, coordination or fine and gross motor difficulties.

Following assessment we are able to guide the client and their family towards the most effective therapy approach to suit their needs. At Family Connections Sydney, we use Sensory Integration, relationship-based and neurodevelopmental approaches, supported by Integrated Listening systems (Focus Program, Safe and Sound Protocol) and Interactive Metronome. We work with young children, adolescents and adults. Through the application of Sensory Integration theory we engage our clients in activities that activate their body and nervous system. The aim is to achieve an adaptive response leading to improved functioning.

Our therapists also work on developing specific skills that our clients need to perform everyday activities including;

  • Postural control, body awareness, timing and motor skills
  • Fine motor coordination for handwriting, self care and use of functional tools.
  • Play skills and social awareness/engagement that are necessary for interactions in the home and community.
  • Oculomotor and vestibular skills to improve reading, motor skills & class participation.
  • Oral motor skills and tolerance to eat a variety of tastes and textures.
  • Co-regulation, self regulation, and social engagement skills by supporting autonomic function

When necessary, we introduce changes to the environment (modifications or compensations) to create the best fit between an individual’s abilities, difficulties and the tasks they need or wish to perform.
